How one hospital is turning a 49% research department loss into a multi-million dollar program

A 400-bed hospital located in the Southeast had a history of conducting only cooperative group cancer trials. Cooperative group trials, while valuable to evaluate cancer therapies, pay very little, last for many years, and do not cover the expenses related to conducting the trials. To manage 50 cooperative group trials with more than 700 patients enrolled or in follow up, the hospital employed a staff of 4.5 FTEs and was operating at a sizable 49% financial loss.
